How a semester grade is calculated
Each quarter (and the final, if there is one) counts for its share of the semester. Multiply each grade by its weight and add them up.
With an 88 in quarter 1 and an 82 in quarter 2, each worth 40%, and the final worth 20%: 88 × 0.4 + 82 × 0.4 = 68 points before the final. For a B (83%) you need (83 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 75% on the final.
Questions
How do I calculate my semester grade?
Multiply each quarter grade and the final by their weights and add them up. With 40% / 40% / 20%, an 88 and an 82 in the quarters and a 75 on the final give 35.2 + 32.8 + 15 = 83%, a B.
How do I calculate my semester grade without a final?
If there's no final, the semester grade is usually the average of the two quarters (50% / 50%). Choose "2 quarters, no final". If there is a final you haven't taken yet, leave it empty to see your grade before it and what you need on it.
What do I need on my final to pass the semester?
Set your goal to "Pass". With a 65 and a 58 in the quarters (40% each) and a 20% final, you're at 49.2 points before the final, so passing at 60% takes (60 − 49.2) ÷ 0.2 = 54% on the final.
How much is the final worth in a semester?
It depends on the school. Splits like 40/40/20 and 45/45/10 are common, and some classes have no final at all. Your syllabus or school handbook has the exact weights, and you can type any split here.
Does my school round my semester grade?
Some do and some don't. The calculator shows the exact grade, so if your school rounds 89.5 up to 90, you'll see how close you are.
